Dames of the Yoshiwara
a collected series of prints by Keisai Eisen
In this digital issue, discover beautiful courtesans of the Yoshiwara through a parody pairing of the 53 Stations of the Tokaido. Illustrations by Keisai Eisen.
This series depicts a traveling game of courtesans from the Yoshiwara- matching them with the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido. The term courtesan refers to a elevated form of sanctioned prostitution catering to the higher classes of Japanese society during the Edo period. The Yoshiwara, located in the city of Edo, (present day Tokyo), was one of three licensed red light districts. The Tokaido was one of five routes in Japan during this period and the most important- connecting Edo(Tokyo) to Kyoto.
